Holiday Christmas Photo Prop Tutorial

Holiday Christmas Photo Prop Tutorial

It’s that time of year again! I’m sure I had good company out there somewhere, as I just spent a few hours tracking down the addresses of people who have moved and writing out all my Christmas cards. Admittedly, I love the process of making the cards and the thought of making the recipients smile, but not the process of me actually getting them to the post office.

This year’s Christmas card theme I think is my favorite to date. I call it “wild heathen.”  It’s full of free-spirited goodness. (That’s what you call it when no one wants to behave or look at the camera, by the way.) The sparkly glitter letters were really easy to put together as photo props, and added the perfect pop of color to our pictures.

Christmas Photo Prop Materials:

  • Spray adhesive or glue
  • Clear spray varnish
  • Paper mache letters to spell HO HO HO
  • Glitter
  • Bamboo skewers

I highly recommend a fairly good sized liner to put under all your letter glittering before you start!

This is so super easy to do, it’ll take about 5 minutes per letter. Spray your adhesive all over your letter then quickly sprinkle the letter with glitter, making sure to get all the areas on the sides as well! You can use brushed on glue as well, but in that case, you’ll have to work in batches to get all the glue on and glittered before it dries. After your letter is glittered, let the glue/adhesive dry.

TIP TO KEEP GLITTER FROM COMING OFF: The bane of glitter is that it gets absolutely everywhere when you use it. To keep your props from leaving a sparkly trail wherever they go, hit them with a quick coat of clear spray varnish. This will keep the glittery look, but will glue it all in place.

If you’ve used the acrylic spray, wait for that to dry. Once it is, turn your letters over and glue two bamboo sticks to the back of each letter so that they will serve as anchors to sink in the ground. Easy peasy!

Take your Christmas photo prop letters –or flamingos– out to the beach for some really memorable Christmas shots!

Happy start to the holiday season!

P.S. Three years later, and this is STILL my favorite Christmas card! Wild heathens for the win!
