Luau Coconut Drink Cups – DIY Paper Luau Flowers

Luau Coconut Drink Cups – DIY Paper Luau Flowers

If you want to celebrate all things sunshine and beachy days, you throw a luau. Grass skirts, tropical flowers and the rest of the works. What is so fantastic about this party theme, is that any of you out there can spend a little or a lot and get a really great party experience out if it.  Sometimes just those little details are the ones that are going to make it really memorable for your guests…like having a set of Luau Coconut Drink Cups on hand for your guests.

And to top off your luau coconut drink cups, you need some paper luau flowers like the ones I’m going to show you how to make today! You can see the luau party they originally came from here.

Usually I let you know when something is super easy to make. Most things I put on my blog are, because there is no more frustrating thing than a Pinterest fail and I want y’all to be successful crafters. I’ll put this one more on the medium spectrum of difficulty…but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a shot! It’s just paper and the investment is minimal. Use a scrap sheet for your first one if you’re nervous. I’ve included where I bought my particular supplies for you with a few affiliate links (they keep my site running, but cost you nothing.)

How to Make Fancy Luau Coconut Drink Cups with DIY Paper Luau Flowers

Materials:

  • Coconut cups (buy them here)
  • Bamboo straws, optional (buy them here)
  • Card stock in green, yellow and at least one other color
  • Hot glue
  • Paper flower template (PDF here for scissor cutting here or SVG file for your Cricut)

I’m officially addicted to my Cricut. I find hand cutting pretty relaxing and Zen, but there is something mighty cool about all the work being done in 10 seconds flat. So if you’re a Cricut kind of person, I’ve got an SVG file for you to use, and if you’ve just got your favorite pair of scissors, there’s a PDF file for you, too!

First up, you’re going to want to print the files for the flowers and cut them if you’re doing the PDF. For the Cricut, import the SVG and set it to cut out.

You’ll want to bend each of the petals inward like shown above. This will give them dimension.

Take a pencil and roll the edges of the petals backwards.

Pretty, right?

There’s an odd little notch in the cut out. It’s there for a reason–I promise!! Bend the flap so it overlaps the paper and glue it down. (I love hot glue, but use what you are comfy with.) This will make the flower make a little cup and be really three dimensional.

Next, you’re going to make the centers for the flowers. I used about a six-inch by 1/8 inch strip of yellow paper for these.

Roll up the strip until you hit the halfway point and then roll it up from the other side in the opposite direction so you make an “S” shape. Cut a few in half…you’ll use one “S” and one single spiral on each flower.

From there, just glue the centers to the middle of the flower with your choice of adhesive. (Again, hooray for hot glue!!)

The leaf shapes are a freehand thing. You don’t want them too uniform or they start to look funny. Glue the two pieces (or more) to the underside of your flowers and then glue the flower to your coconut. Pop in a paper bamboo straw and you’re ready to hula the night away!
