Yesterday we held a “knights and princesses” tea party for our turn hosting the mom’s group play date. The kids had SUCH a good time. One little boy whined the whole way to the play date he didn’t want to go to an icky old tea party. The whole way home he told his mom he wanted to go to another one the next day!
When the kids (ahem), knights and princesses arrived, they were shown to the armory and the wardrobe. Last year around halloween I picked up several sets of “armor” and swords at the dollar store that the boys loved dressing up in.
Set out for the girls were pearls, giant diamond rings and tiaras–all inexpensive party favor items. I put all the costume accessories back in a box at the end of the play date to save for the next time!
For the buffet, I opted not to do sweets, and instead found some fun ways to display a few healthy snacks.
I put carrot and celery sticks in shot glasses with a little ranch dressing at the bottom. Zucchini and pinapple muffins with a dab of cream cheese frosting instead of cupcakes. (Recipe to follow!) Of course, there were cupcake toppers to tie them with the rest of the display. Parmesan goldfish were served in tiny cups and goblets; these were an Ikea find a few months ago! And for a fun twist on tea sandwiches, sandwiches on a stick were served.
And then I had a little fun fluffing and styling my buffet with an Ikea frame I spray painted white, the flower pots left over from the frog prince party, and two tissue poufs!
I just loved the way the table setting turned out. Using my favorite Christmas gift ever, my lacy tablecloth from Malta, to set the style, I layered colored paper plates and napkins and made little teacup arrangements with sugar cookie pops at each place setting. Tutorial on these soon!
There was also a cake stand full of miniature and regular sized cookies and two small vases of candy sticks. And a tea party isn’t a tea party without cucumber sandwiches! In addition to the full sized zucchini muffins, I made mini muffins on plates around the table for the kids to enjoy. Tiny food is just more fun.
And while the pre-chaos pictures are pretty, I really loved the live action shots I caught of the kids enjoying themselves!
