Fun Family Thanksgiving Activities

The days leading up to Thanksgiving when the kids are out of school and Thanksgiving day itself tends to be a bit chaotic in my house.  I’m usually cooking up a storm, and my kids are doing their best impressions of tornados as they zip through the house creating the biggest mess they can so they be really really thankful that they have a mom to clean up after them. But as with any other day of the year, I find the kids are far less destructive when their hands are busy with something constructive.

SInce there is likely an adult family member or two (besides myself) hanging around during the holidays, it’s a great time to introduce some crafty projects that include the whole family in the fun.  A few pre-planned activities that the adults will enjoy just as much as the kids are a great way to kick off a peaceful holiday!  Here are a few ideas to get you started.

I designed the Tree of Thanks to set the attitude of gratitude at the table.  It’s an easy way for the whole family to share what they are thankful for this year and a wonderful conversation starter.

Add an extra special touch to the dinner table by creating these Painted Leaves Thanksgiving Napkins.  The kids can feel crafty while the adults can add the finishing touches and accomplish a project together.

Try your hand at constructing a historical center piece as a family, like this Mayflower Center Piece .  It’s a great way to sneak a little learning into all the fun!

Taking the family on a stroll outside is always a great way to burn off a little extra energy.  While you are out, have the kids collect the fallen leaves.  Afterwards, make Wax Dipped Leaves and string them up around the dinner table to set the mood.

Not every food craft has to be created from candy.  Kids and Adults will enjoy making this healthy Fruit Gobbler to snack on throughout the day.

Using crayons and colored pencils, everyone in the family can participate in making Turkey Hand Print Art .  Part of the fun is seeing the wide range of creativity that abounds from just a hand print. For an extra special touch, frame the finished turkeys to display year after year.

Everyone loves looking at photos, especially if they might be in them!  Create a photo banner as a family to celebrate the milestones achieved during the year!  It’s a visual way to be remember important events and all the wonderful things to be thankful for this year!
