Mad Hatter Tea Towels with Cricut BrightPad

Mad Hatter Tea Towels with Cricut BrightPad

I love a good Mad Hatter tea party and anything else Alice in Wonderland. So this Christmas, when I told my kids they were going to make some presents for the grandparents and they came up with this “We are all a little mad around here” mad hatter tea towel for grandma, I was delighted! They chose some sparkly glitter iron on to make them perfect.

Unfortunately, I ran around like a crazy person for most of the week before Christmas and before we went out of town. There wasn’t enough time and I didn’t get around to helping them actually make their Mad Hatter tea towels. Until now! (And not to worry, Grandma had a great Christmas anyway!)

Creating these towels is a perfect way to show you one of my favorite Cricut products I don’t think gets shown off enough. The Cricut BrightPad. It is especially useful for projects like this that use glitter iron-on.

Glitter iron-on is really awesome once it’s on your project, but the weeding part to get it on your project can be a bit of a headache. The Cricut BrightPadmakes weeding glitter iron on a whole lot easier.

After your vinyl is cut, place it on the Cricut BrightPad, turn the BrightPad on, and the light shines through the cuts in your vinyl. If you have ever weeded glitter vinyl before, you know that those cut marks are impossible to see otherwise.

Kind Of genius, Huh? And not only does it help out with the weeding, but the BrightPad is incredibly thin and light. It’s hard 9×11.5″ area doesn’t heat up over time (because it’s LED!) so you can be perfectly comfortable with it sitting in your lap for as long as your project takes to weed. (Or needlepoint. Or trace…) If it’s one of those really complex designs, you know it can be awhile!!

Next week, I’ll show you a few other uses for your Cricut BrightPad from when I took art classes in college!

How to make a mad hatter tea towel

This is pretty much your standard iron on project, and if you need more instruction on how to do iron on, please see this post. It’ll go through some nitty-gritty details.

Step one. Open up the Mad hatter tea towel project in design space and cut the pieces out of glitter vinyl.

Step two. Turn on your bright pad and weed your vinyl.

TOP SECRET VINYL WEEDING TIP: to better see the light through the cuts, if you bend the vinyl slightly between your fingers it will widen the cuts so the light is more visible, and where to weed out the vinyl is more visible.

Step three. Iron your design onto your tea towel.

TOP SECRET VINYL IRON-ON HACK: assemble the design in layers altogether. You should be able to see how the design will look when completed this way. Put the piece of the design you would like to iron on first at the bottom of this stack.

Place the entire stack on the fabric you plan to iron on two in order to properly center your design. Leave The bottom vinyl piece on the fabric and Peele the rest Off the stack and start airing on piece by piece. The bottom layer will provide guidance as to where the rest of the pieces should go.

More Uses for the BrightPad

Stay tuned for next week’s project–making hand drawn portraits! And no, you don’t have to be an artist to make them as long as you have a BrightPad!
