Pretty Jute-Wrapped Centerpiece Vases for a Tropical Party {Tutorial}

One of my favorite things about decorating for parties is being able to take store-bought pieces and with a few quick touches, creating them into something unique and specific to the event I’m throwing. Around the time of the anniversary party, the beginning of June, the massive hydrangea bushes in my parents’ gardens start blooming, so those (free) blossoms were in the party plan from the beginning for the table centerpieces.

Admittedly, I searched high and low for tropical looking colored vases that were going to match the palm tree themed anniversary party and contrast nicely with the hydrangeas, but what I came up with were vases at $30 and $40. That certainly blew the budget for as many as I needed, so I had to go the DIY route. Not that I minded, as I love flexing my crafty muscles every once in awhile.

I wandered through my favorite place to spend all my money, Hobby Lobby, and stumbled on these vases with a very interesting shape for $7. And lucky me, they were half off that week, so double score! Natural fibers were part of the overall texture and color scheme, so I picked up some thick jute cording as well to complement the tablescape. Sisal rope would have worked well, too.

Putting the vases together was quick and easy, it was really just a matter of carving out some time to get them complete!

JUTE WRAPPED VASE MATERIALS:

– Vase

– Jute or Sisal cording

– Hot glue

Step 1. Pull the end of your jute out of the roll, but don’t cut! How much jute you need will depend on the size and shape of your vase and how much of it you want wrapped. Leaving a 6-inch hanging piece (you’ll use this to finish the vase off with a  knot later), hot glue the jute horizontally to the side of the vase. Place it at the lowest point you want your jute to be visible at, as we’ll be wrapping the successive layer above this line.

Step 2: Wrap the jute around the vase, working your way up towards the top. Every few inches or so, pull the cord tight and add a dab of hot glue to keep it in place. I wrapped each of my vases 8-9 times, but how much you think you need is up to you.

Step 3: Add your final bit of glue right above where you started gluing down your cord so the ends will be close enough together to make some nice decoration on the vase. Leave a good six inches hanging and cut your jute.

Step 4: Decoration! This step is only limited by your imagination. I tied the ends of mine here in a square knot (right over left, then left over right) and using a bit of hot glue, coiled the cording in two pretty curls.

And you’re done! The whole process shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes or so. It took me more time to drive to Hobby Lobby and pick out the vases.

Drop in a handful of blossoms, line them up down the center of a table or use them all on their own. These jute wrapped vases are perfect for custom-looking centerpieces for all sorts of occasions!
