Adult coloring is a trend that is catching on with a fervor that is a little unexpected. Until you pick up an adult coloring book yourself and try it out. It is its own form of meditation as you color in intricate lines and patterns and slowly finish pages to completion. There is no rush in it, the coloring is all about the process. It’s its own kind of Zen.

But you’re short changing the experience if you use and inferior pencil. When I was an art major, I bought my first set of Prismacolor pencils at Michaels. The drawing class professor listed the brand by name and I was a little frustrated as a college student that my crayon-brand pencils weren’t going to be good enough to make pictures with. Then I used them and I completely understood the why of buying good pencils! The pencil leads glide across paper like butter and their highly pigmented tips leave deeper and richer colors behind. They are really really different than what you buy your children for school! If you’re adult coloring for relaxation, it’s worth a little treat to yourself to get good supplies.

This tutorial for origami paper bows from Origami Instructions fit the bill perfectly. We took a bunch of our adult coloring pages and folded them into toppers for Christmas packages. It’s a pretty simple paper folding exercise, but not traditional origami, as you do make a snip or two while you’re making them. The bow works with lots of different sized papers, so you can be creative.
