The Captain Underpants movie is really one with a lot of heart and about true friendships. This one is perfect for family movie night, moms and dads!
THE CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS MOVIE Night SNACKS
If you’ve followed the blog for a bit, you’ve seen that we always put a few great snacks together along with craft that ties into what we’re watching. This time, we did a spin on the popcorn ball. Personally, I think it was a lot easier to make (no corn syrup!) than traditional popcorn balls because we made them like rice krispie treats with melted marshmallows instead. The whole process took about 10 minutes start to finish, which fits into my idea of a great treat!
Pop Secret Popcorn all on its own is pretty great–it’s a high-quality brand that you can feel good about sharing with your family. We personally love all the inventive flavors they offer in their line; Kettle Corn is our favorite. It’s always easy to find at Walmart.
But sometimes it’s good to shake up movie night with something new and different–like using that popcorn to make popcorn balls. Add a few rainbow sprinkles to make them even more fun. Since these popcorn balls were for a Captain Underpants viewing, we dressed them up a bit! Get the free printable templates to package them up after the recipe.
Add a few Lance Crackers to the snack offerings and you’re set! Did you know they’ve been making little sandwich crackers for over 100 years? Two awesome crackers on the outside and yummy spreads in between mean more for the family–they’re filling and portable…and perfect for movie night.
Rainbow Sprinkle Marshmallow Popcorn Balls Recipe
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4 cups miniature marshmallows
- 12 cups popped popcorn (about 4 bags Pop Secret Popcorn)
- Rainbow sprinkles – amount of your choice
Pop your Pop Secret Popcorn in the microwave (a bag at a time) according to the instructions on the bag.
While that is happening, heat a large pot on the stove. Drop in your butter and let it melt all the way.
Add the 4 cups of marshmallows (this is generally about 1 standard sized bag of marshmallows) and stir the marshmallows until they are melted and combined with the butter.
Remove the pot from heat and stir the popcorn into the marshmallow mixture. Be sure to keep as many unpopped kernels out of the mix as possible! Stir in the rainbow sprinkles. Eyeball how much you want in the popcorn. It’s really hard to put too much in.
Drop large clumps of popcorn onto waxed or parchment paper, allowing the popcorn to cool for a minute or two.
Pick up each popcorn clump and roll into a ball. Makes 8-10 popcorn balls.

Captain Underpants Bag Tags
To wrap up our Captain Underpants Rainbow Sprinkle Marshmallow Popcorn Balls (say that three times fast!) I dropped the popcorn balls into a cellophane bag and added a tiny pair of underwear and a red cape.
Pictures don’t do this one justice, so here’s a short video on how to attach them. Here are the files you’ll need:
- Underpants pdf (cut with scissors)
- Underpants project in Design Space (cut with Cricut)
- Cape pdf (cut with scissors)
- Cape svg (cut with Cricut)
Once you’ve got them cut out, draw in a few lines on the underwear and tie around the bag with a piece of ribbon. Easy peasy!
The Captain Underpants Movie Night Activity
We like to have a little creative adventure with our movie time, and for this movie, we decided to make our own comic books. After all, the idea to hypnotize the principal and make him Captain Underpants came from a comic book!
Drawing all the little boxes is hard, so I’ve made a set of free printables for you to download and print and make that party easy. Get them here.
After your kids are done with the middle of their comic books, wrap a plain piece of paper around the outside and let them get busy on a cover.
I really love the creativity. Plus, the kids feel a bigger connection with the Captain Underpants movie with this activity–the main characters Harold and George have a great friendship bond because of their love of writing and creativity. Adding a little creativity of our own makes for some deeper understanding of the movie plot.
We’re looking forward to our Captain Underpants family movie night, and hope you get a chance to have one of your own!
