Backyard Movie Party Ideas

In the cooler nights of late summer, there is nothing better than rounding up a few friends, tossing a screen up in the backyard and taking in a movie under the stars. That is exactly what we did in this backyard movie party–with a little added extra of a “concession stand” with a popcorn bar, single serve mason jar cocktails for the adults and drive-in cars for the kids.

Take a few of these ideas and make them your own!

For a special family party or group event, host a backyard movie party!

Backyard Movie Party Popcorn Bar

Popcorn and movies are inseparable. To put a fun spin on a typical popcorn and movie event, create a popcorn bar instead that will give your guests the chance to be a little creative and interactive with their movie-time treats.

Make your own popcorn bar for your backyard movie party!

Set out small containers of mix-ins like nuts, cranberries, shredded cheeses, sprinkles, miniature M&M’s chocolate chips and whatever else strikes your fancy. The list of possible mix-ins is long!

Backyard movie parties are best with popcorn bars

You’ll need a few containers for all that popcorn. I love smallish popcorn boxes for this. The ones in this picture were printed, cut and assembled, but if you like your boxes ready-made you can buy a few similar ones here.

Paper popcorn boxes are perfect for serving at a backyard movie party! Large bowls of popcorn are the base for popcorn treats at this backyard movie party

I loaded up a few large (clean!) vases and a trifle bowl with popcorn to make our display a little extra fancy and wrapped the tops with strips of glitter tape (buy it here). Such a simple detail, but it really brought the table together with style!

Cute signs for the popcorn bar are necessary! Love these at this backyard movie party

I can never pass up the opportunity to set out a cute sign…

Popcorn is better with mix-ins at a backyard movie party

The kids at your party (and probably the adults, too) will love their custom popcorn creations for sitting back and watching the show. Our guests made several trips back to make new flavor combinations so they could try everything on the table.

I love this idea. My kids and I would have a field day with this kind of set up for our movie nights.

Thank you for sharing this with us on the #HomeMattersParty. We hope to see you again when we open our doors on Friday at 12 AM EST.

This is a great idea. I love the popcorn bar and all the clever movie themed decorations and concessions. Five years ago I threw a movie themed 75th birthday party for my dad who is a film buff and we screened “Hopscotch” outside on the lawn. I wish I had done something like your concession stand for that party. Thanks so much for sharing it on Share Your Style.

Meet Paula

My father came home from a trip for work when I was a little girl toting a huge (to me) book of fairy tales. I was instantly smitten with the beautiful illustrations and the stories that came alive from those worn pages. My favorite was always the frog prince…my mother read it to me over and over (and over.) Read More…
