Cake Stands: DIY Tutorials

Artisan cake stands by Clara French

A nice cake stand or cupcake tower is a good thing to have on hand for entertaining. There are so many ways to use them–for cupcakes, cakes, appetizers, little decorative vingnettes, and the list goes on. You can find inexpensive, but beautiful cake stands at places like Homegoods or Marshall’s, but if you’re looking for something just a little bit different, there are plenty of ways to make your own!

Anthropologie Cake Stand

On a recent trip to Anthropologie, I spotted a darling cupcake tower that looked just like this. I was determined to make my own! I was beaten to the tutorial punch by Adventures in Creating, but happy to see someone has put it all together for me to follow.

Simply find your cups and saucers, apply a little gorilla glue for stability and place some heavy books on top to weight down while the glue dries. Beautiful!

Shabby Chic Vase Cake Stands

Desiree at Simply Simon creates cake stands out of thrift store plates and goblets–and they are wonderful! This would be perfect for a sit down tea where you could make a stand for each individual guest. Or use them as hostess gifts like she does! She recommends a heavy duty glue–E6000.

“Green” Paper Stand

Martha has her own version of the cake stand she’s recommending for candy over on her site that is “green.” A little hot glue, some solo cups and sturdy paper plates is all you need for this one.

Idividual Dessert Pedestals

Originally made by Kristy of the Purple Pug, Catch My Party recently offered up a tutorial on making individual dessert pedestals using wooden candlestick, unfinished wood circles and a little bit of paint! Brilliant!

The Frog Prince Paperie Cake Tower

My cake stand collection is beginning to rival my shoe collection, but I still find the need to make a temporary cake tower on occasion for the right height and diameter. I use my regular dinner plates, saucers, etc. and place them on overturned water glasses, vases, matching candlesticks, etc. etc. etc. Anything with a sturdy bottom is fair game! Easy, and you probably already have the materials lurking in your cupboard.
