Football Craft: Tissue Paper Pom Poms and Football Centerpiece

Football Craft: Tissue Paper Pom Poms and Football Centerpiece

As a party supply hoarder, I can tell you for a fact that any centerpiece or decoration that you make that you don’t feel bad about pitching after the party is a good one. As I struggle to find room in my burgeoning garage and office space, I look more and more for temporary party decor. This football centerpiece with tissue paper pom poms is all that and more. Made from items re-purposed from around the house and paper, after the Superbowl, these football decorations will be a distant memory!

I also recommend having a rotary paper cutter, steel ruler and cutting mat on hand for this project; they’ll make the process much quicker!

STEP 1: Creating the Pompom.

First thing, you’ll want to put together your pompoms for your centerpiece. These are great for tossing around your table as decoration, or handing to your favorite short person to wildly wave around during the big game. Take a regular 8 to 10 pack of tissue paper you get from the store and open it up. Fold the tissue paper along the length.

Place your folded tissue paper on the cutting mat. You’ll want to cut strips in the tissue paper in 1/4 inch increments. Every fifth strip, cut the grouping free to create separate tassels. It’s easiest to use a rotary cutter against a steel ruler to cut these strips! Scissors can be used if you don’t have access to anything like this.

Take your cut strips and open them up. Layer two stacks on top of each other. If you’d like a more solid look to your pompoms, use the same color in each stack. Alternating colors will give your pom poms a salt and pepper sort of look.

Pick up one of the stacks of cut tissue paper and start twisting the center until the entire uncut part is twisted together.

Continue to twist the paper until it folds in half. You may have to encourage it a bit to get it exactly in half. If your twist isn’t that tight, go ahead and use a little bit of hot glue to keep the twist together.

Take two of the paper twists and hot glue them together at the twists. This can serve as sort of a handle, and makes it easy to place in your centerpiece.

And your pompom is done!

STEP 2: Assemble the football centerpiece.

To put together the centerpiece, print and cut out the football pennants. Wrap the edge around the dowel rod and glue it down. Tie a piece of ribbon to the top if you’d like!

Place the football in the container you’ve chosen (I used an old trophy), pop in the pom pom and the pennants and you’re done with your football centerpiece! After the party, you can toss the paper products, and put your vase and football back where you got them.

What can I use to replace the old trophy? I’m trying to think of a cute vase. Any suggestions?

Great question! I athink if you could find a vase with a big enough mouth it would work. Fill the vase with paper shred if it’s clear!

What a fun decoration idea! Thank you for sharing the detailed steps and pictures. I like the "use what you have" mentality here and that I don't have to store everything afterwards. Thanks!
