One of the fun DIY items I made to go with the American Girl Tea Party (see it here!) was a set of pink scalloped place mats. They were very inexpensive, very custom and took minutes to make.
How to Make American Girl Party Placemats
You can use the smaller size sheets that are available at the craft store, or the 11×20 sheets that they have available (in which case, each sheet will yeild 2 placemats.) This project is meant to be cut on the Cricut Maker. There are a few affiliate links below–they cost you nothing, but help me pay server fees to keep this site running if you click over.
Materials:
- Pink felt, light
- Pink felt, dark
- 5/8 inch pink ribbon
- hot glue
- Placemat project in Design Space
- Cricut Maker
After you gather your materials, you’ll need to open the placemat project in Design Space. Load your felt on your mat, and start cutting! As a note, I used the fabric mats at first for my felt, but then switched over to the green standard mats. They held much better. For cotton-type thin fabric, the pink mats are still your best bet, but I liked the green mats for felt.
Still can’t get over the precision cuts! No way would I ever be able to do this with a pair of scissors.
Layer the dark pink felt over the light pink. Weave the ribbon in and out of the pre-cut holes. I found the Cricut weeding tools (like these) to be perfect for getting the ribbon through the holes easily!
In one end of the mat, tie a knot in the fabric to finish it.
On the other, add a dab of hot glue on the back (the light pink) and glue down the excess ribbon.
For a little bit of extra cuteness, a pink bow glued to the top corner by the American Girl star.
With the Cricut Maker, this is a pretty quick project to make and a great party accent!
