Mario Brothers – How to make a Bob-omb DIY

Big props make a huge difference when you’re setting up a birthday party or a Super Mario trunk or treat display like we did. Big doesn’t need to mean costly; there are plenty of inexpensive items to use to make space consuming props that look great. Following is how to make a bob-omb that shows you just how easy (and inexpensive!) big can be!

How to make a bo-omb

You can make your tissue poms yourself, but I always buy mine anymore as they’re more affordable and easier to put together than doing this myself. You can hit the dollar store or buy them through Amazon here (affiliate link.) The ones at the dollar store aren’t very fluffy, so you’ll want to glue two of them together to make one big pouf! The dollar store will also carry the paracord.

bo-omb materials:

  • 12-inch Tissue pom (buy them here)
  • White card stock
  • Bo-omb printable file (download here)
  • White paracord

Get all your pieces parts ready! Print the Bob-omb file onto the white cardstock and cut the pieces out. Fluff up your tissue pom, and cut a 6inch piece of paracord.

The key. We are limited on space with a letter sized sheet of paper–so the key for the back of the Super Mario Bob-omb needs a little creative engineering. Fold the key in half, then the glue the little white rectangle to the inside of the key. This is going to make the shaft of the key a little longer so we can bury that part deep in the pom when we start assembling.

In case you didn’t guess on your own, you’ll want to glue the folded key together once the extra piece is in.

The fuse hat. Take your circle and poke a hole in the middle with your scissors.

Push the end of the paracord through the hole, then glue the end to the underside (white side) of the circle.

Make a loop with the long blue rectangle and glue the ends together.

Run a bead of glue along the top of the paper loop, then pop the circle with the fuse on the top to make a little hat.

Hot glue the eyes into place on the tissue pouf.

Glue on the feet.

Run a bead of hot glue on the bottom of the fuse hat and place on top of your bob-omb. Glue the key into the back, too!

In no time, you’ll have your own little army of Super Mario Bob-ombs!

If you haven’t seen it already, be sure to check out the Super Mario Trunk or Treat–every one of these ideas is birthday party ready as well!

Meet Paula

My father came home from a trip for work when I was a little girl toting a huge (to me) book of fairy tales. I was instantly smitten with the beautiful illustrations and the stories that came alive from those worn pages. My favorite was always the frog prince…my mother read it to me over and over (and over.) Read More…
