Patriotic Wall Art Canvas

Patriotic Wall Art Canvas

If you’ve got a spot in your house that is just dying for a little patriotic decoration, this 4th of July wall art canvas may be just the thing for you!

Now, if you’re like me, you’ve probably got one or two ill-fated canvases stashed away from an fun night out doing wine and painting. Love that whole process, but honestly, hate having to take home the painting at the end. Here’s a way to give it a new life that you’ll love!

Materials:

  • Canvas
  • Blue Painter’s Tape
  • Red Paint
  • White Paint
  • Blue cardstock

Paint your canvas white. Give it a few coats if it has dark colors to cover up.

Tape off your canvas. Take the width of your canvas and divide by 6. This is how many stripes you’ll end up with. All you need to do then is measure out and tape off your 6 stripes. Be sure to cover the stripes you want to keep white with your painters tape!

Paint on the red stripes. Mine took a few coats to make them nice and dark. Paint on the stripes and let them dry between coats until they are the darkness you desire.

Peel up the painters tape. I used chalk paint for my white paint, so I was going for a perfectly imperfect kind of look with my painting. The painter’s tape bled a little bit, but I’m ok with that…it adds some character.

Place stars on the canvas. See below how to make these cute 3d paper stars–they are so easy, they’re addictive! I used 13 3-inch blue stars in a circle on the big canvas in the pictures. Use as many or few as you want. If you have a smaller canvas, one giant star in the middle would look fabulous! I just used a few glue dots per star to adhere them to the canvas. That way, when you want to change the look of your canvas later, the stars are easy to remove.

How to Make 3D Paper Stars

How-to-Make-3d-Stars

The process is pretty simple. First, you cut your star shape. (I totally cheated here and used a 3-inch star punch.) But all you have to do is make a star template in the size star you want then trace it onto your cardstock.

Score your stars. Using a ruler or scoring board and a bone folder, create five scores in each start. Start at each of the points, and go straight down to the indentation on the opposite side of the star.

Fold the stars in half. Five times, along each of the score lines.

Pinch the points together to make the star 3D and they are ready to use!

You can make the stars as small or large as you want!  A few made with 12×12 pieces of cardstock were the perfect finishers for our wall art display for the 4th of July.
